San Francisco Bay Trail/Bayland Nature Preserve
The San Francisco Bay Trail, which runs through most of the Bay Area, cuts through one of the most intriguing nature preserves on the Peninsula, Palo Alto’s Baylands Nature Preserve. Home to 150 different species of bird, the preserve stretches over 2000 acres. Despite being surrounded by development and being home to the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course and Palo Alto Airport, among other things, the area is a nature lover’s dream. Along the way are a duck pond, a picnic area and Byxbee Park. The trail picks up on the levee between Charleston Slough and Adobe Creek at Mountain View Park. The Baylands Nature Preserve can be reached from Embarcadero Road east. Call 650.359.2056 for info.
Bay Area Ridge Trail
From the 280, Page Mill Road leads west to Highway 35 and the spectacular views of the Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve, home to the Palo Alto Vista Trail Run. The view at various points include Stanford, the marshes of Alviso, and Moffett Field. The area is famous for its brightly colored spring wildflowers.
Foothills Trails
Foothills Park (at 3300 Page Mill Road) is open only to Palo Alto residents, but everyone canhike the nearby trails at Foothills Open Space Preserve. About 200 acres located in the Adobe Creek watershed, the preserve’s hilly trails can be accessed from Page Mill Road at Moody Road.
Pearson-Arastradero Trails
The Pearson-Arastradero Preserve at 1530 Arastradero Road in Palo Alto features over 10 miles of trails, with over half of them open year-round. Some trails are closed after heavy rains. The trails are grassy in parts and heavily wooded in others, with an abundance of deer and other wildlife.
